Background Information – East and Southern Africa Multi Country Office
UNOPS East & Southern Africa Multi-Country Office (ESAMCO) has an established Operations Centre in Nairobi, Kenya which manages a portfolio of engagements in multiple countries in East and Southern Africa. This includes projects in partnership with the Nairobi based UN Agencies, UN-Habitat and UNEP, and multiple ‘operational’ projects in Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Somalia, Zimbabwe, Zambia, Mozambique and Malawi.
Background Information - Project Information
Biodiversity conservation, sustainable land management and enhanced water security in Lake Tanganyika basin project is a project aimed at strengthening the collaborative partnerships between the Lake Tanganyika Authority (LTA) and the contracting States (Burundi, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Tanzania and Zambia). Lake Tanganyika Authority (LTA) was established by the contracting States on 12 June 2003 when the contracting States adopted what they call “Convention on the Sustainable Management of Lake Tanganyika.”
The project is funded by the Global Environment Facility (GEF) through United Nations Environment (UNEP). UNOPS will be the Project Executing Agency, and is accountable to UNEP for the overall implementation of the project. UNOPS will establish a trans-boundary Project Coordination Unit (PCU) in Bujumbura, Burundi to coordinate the day-to-day administration and operations of the project across the four riparian countries (Burundi, DRC, Tanzania and Zambia).
The project has 4 components:
Addressing identified transboundary threats to fish biodiversity
(ii) Protection of core conservation zones in protected areas
(iii) Sustainable natural resource use in protected areas and their buffer zones
(iv) Transboundary coordination, information management and M&E.
Background Information - Job-specific
Under the guidance and supervision of the Finance and Contracts Manager, the driver will be responsible for providing reliable and secure driving services and ensuring proper use of the vehicle as per the organization policy. The position requires the incumbent to have a client-oriented approach, high standards of professionalism and responsibility, good communication skills, courtesy, tact and the ability to work with people of different national and cultural backgrounds.

Functional Responsibilities
1. Provides reliable and secure driving services by:
Driving vehicles safely for the transport of authorized personnel;
Collecting and delivering mail, documents and other items;
Meeting official personnel at the airport and facilitating immigration and customs formalities in coordination with the relevant personnel..
2. Ensures proper use of vehicle through accurate maintenance of daily vehicle logs, provision of inputs to preparation of the vehicle maintenance plans and reports;
3. Ensures the day-to-day maintenance of the assigned vehicle by checking oil, water, battery, brakes, tries, etc.; performing minor repairs and arranging for major repairs; and ensuring that the vehicle is kept clean;
4. Ensures availability of all the required documents/supplies including vehicle insurance, vehicle logs, office directory, map of the city/country, first aid kit, and necessary spare parts;
5. Ensures that immediate steps as required by rules and regulations are taken in case of involvement in an accident.
Education/Experience/Language requirements
Education:
Secondary education is required.
Experience
Minimum 2 years of experience as a driver with a safe driving record is required;
Knowledge of driving rules and regulations, and skills in minor vehicle repairs are an asset.
Experience as a driver in an international organisation or non-governmental organisation is an asset.
An in-depth knowledge of Bujumbura city and experience driving in Bujumbura and upcountry are an asset.
Experience driving to and in neighboring countries (Tanzania and DRC) is an asset.
Language Requirements
Fluency in written and oral French is required;
Working knowledge of English and/or Kirundi and/or Swahili is an asset.
Certifications
A valid Burundi driver's license is required.

For staff positions only, UNOPS reserves the right to appoint a candidate at a lower level than the advertised level of the post.
For retainer contracts, you must complete a few mandatory courses ( they take around 4 hours to complete) in your own time, before providing services to UNOPS. Refreshers or new mandatory courses may be required during your contract. Please note that you will not receive any compensation for taking courses and refreshers.
